Meeting Minutes

February 20, 2013

Present: Tracy Roberson, Karen Vedder, Linda Kuller, Liz Illg, Theresa Simendinger, Louise Dustrude, Bill Severson, Mike Lazzari, Kyle Loring

Volunteer hours since previous meeting: 27 (including 2 hours reported by Sue Buettell for Roche Harbor Trails)

Discussion:

• Potluck – will be held March 20, 2013 at the Grange at 5:30 p.m. Speakers are Kathleen Foley (hiking in Patagonia) and Bill Severson (cycling the Katy Trail).

• Feb. Know Your Island Walk – Barbara Jensen and Mike Lazzari will lead birding walk at Jakle’s Lagoon.

• Working with high school students – Mike Lazzari, Dave Zeretzke, and Teresa Simendinger secured student support to help take GPS coordinates to better map some of the island’s trails, starting with Mitchell Hill. They sought trails committee member support for chaperoning walks on weekdays.

• Bicycle webinar – Liz Illg informed the committee of a webinar on Oregon’s approach to bicycling to be held at Skagit Valley College on Feb. 28, at 1-3:30 p.m.

• Transportation Element of the Comprehensive Plan – Linda Kuller, the San Juan County planner working on the Transportation Element, provided information about the current draft of that Element. She is working with a grant from the Washington Department of Transportation that ends June 2013. The group discussed the Trails Element with Ms. Kuller.

o Upcoming dates for the Transportation Element:

 March 14, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. Friday Harbor public meeting

 April 19, 26 – Planning Commission hearings
