San Juan Island Trails Committee

Meeting Minutes

December 19, 2012

Present: Louise Dustrude, Bill Severson, Theresa Simendinger, Kyle Loring, Dave Zeretzke, David Harsh, Howie Rosenfeld, Cinda Pierce, Lee Taylor, Sally Thomsen, Tracy Roberson, Liz Illg, Frank Mulcahy, Lincoln Bormann

Volunteer hours since previous meeting: 63 (including 13 hours reported by Sue Buettell for Roche Harbor Trails)

Discussion: The meeting provided an opportunity for the Trails Committee to share its appreciation for partners that had collaborated on significant projects in 2012, including the San Juan County Land Bank, National Park Service, San Juan County Public Works Department, and Island Rec.

• Lee Taylor, Superintendant of the San Juan Island National Historic Park, discussed her work with the Trails Committee to develop plans for increased equestrian use of the park;

• Frank Mulcahy, Director of SJC Public Works, discussed Public Works efforts to increase funding for non-motorized transportation in the County;

• Sally Thomsen, Director of Island Rec, discussed partnership with Trails Committee and committed to lead first Know Your Island Walk of 2013;

• Lincoln Bormann, Director of the Land Bank, spoke of the perseverance by which the Trails Committee and the Land Bank earned the trust of landowners along the American Camp Trail and by which they have completed the necessary agreements to open the trail. It is scheduled to be open to the public in June 2013;

• Howie Rosenfeld bid the group goodbye in his capacity as the County Council representative because he will relinquish his post as of January 1, 2013; and

• Meeting adjourned to enjoy holiday treats and celebrate the season.
