San Juan Island Trails Committee Minutes

December 14, 2011

Present: Lincoln Bormann, Peter Dawson, Eileen Drath, Louise Dustrude, Eliza Habegger, David Harsh, Peter Morrison, Cinda Pierce, Sandy Rabinowitz, Howie Rosenfeld, Bill Severson, Theresa Simendinger, Steve Ulvi, Dave Zeretzke.

Volunteer Hours this Month: 125

Call to Order: The regular meeting was called to order by the Chair Bill Severson at 5pm.

Land Steward Eliza Habegger of the Land Bank asked that members of the Trails Committee check the Land Bank’s web site to see if their maps are easy to find and easy to understand. She would also appreciate feedback from us on their web site in general.

Director Lincoln Bormann of the Land Bank spoke about the good cooperation between our two groups. He said he looks forward to collaborating with us on a trail somewhere on the island that can be finished within a reasonable time period, as a good example to show the public. He suggested this might be a trail on the Beaverton Marsh Preserve, with a connection to the Town of Friday Harbor. He suggested the possibility of a bird blind, perhaps first adjoining Westside Lake and then another on the Beaverton Marsh Preserve.

Sandy Rabinowitz came to the group to report on the condition of the Eagle Cove Trail, which has been eroding at the bottom so that getting down to the beach (or back up to the trail) is sometimes challenging. She has met with Doug McCutchen of the Land Bank, and he suggested something similar to what they did at Deadman Bay. Bill said there will be a field trip tomorrow with Doug, Steve Ulvi, Thom Pence, and Allan Rosenberg to come up with a proposal for the county. Howie suggested cc’ing the new Public Works Director, Frank Mulcahy, who may have resources that can be committed.

Mitchell Hill Puncheon Project: Theresa Simendinger reported that this project was completed in two Saturdays with extraordinary cooperation between National Park Service employees and both bicycle and horse volunteers.

Cinda Pierce reported that the trail across the Ted Middleton property on Cattle Point Road adjoining Jensen Bay Road has been nearly completed. Mark Pierce and Allan Rosenberg spent 26-1/2 hours prepping the trail, and then 8 volunteers worked a total of 18 hours. There is one area that needs a fence because of sheep; she will be checking to see if Public Works can help with the fence.

In addition, she reported 17 volunteer hours at an earlier work party on the Smith property on Cattle Point Road adjoining Fairway Drive.

Respectfully submitted, Louise Dustrude, Acting Secretary
