At the Northwest end of the island three separate owners provide trails that link to one another: Roche Harbor, Roche Harbor Highlands and the National Park.
English Camp is part of the San Juan Island National Historical Park (SJINHP). The National Park maintains a network of scenic trails through land that commemorates the British presence during the Pig War of 1859 through 1872. The Park recently acquired the adjoining Mitchell Hill property from the DNR and additional acreage along Westcott Bay to the north. The associated network of trails is a welcome addition to the park.
English Camp offers trails to the open Parade Ground, through the woods, and up to the Cemetery and breathtaking views to Canada from the top of Mt. Young. Connector trails lead to Roche Harbor Highlands and the newly acquired Mitchell Hill property. And a new trail links the Westcott Bay addition.
Note: The NPS has installed signage in their newly acquired areas but trails on Mitchell Hill and in the Roche Harbor Highlands form a maze that may become confusing at times. It is important to use good navigating skills. Print the map and bring it with you along with a compass and/or GPS. Cell phone reception is unreliable so be sure to download the map before setting out.
- A newly completed trail between English Camp and Roche Harbor is now open for public use, but may be difficult to follow in places. Pay attention at all trail intersections. Download the map
